1. Core Material Analysis
Non-magnetic drill collars are used in oil drilling and need to maintain stability under highly corrosive environments and geomagnetic field interference. Monel K-500 contains a nickel-copper alloy, which is resistant to seawater corrosion and has strong mechanical properties; Inconel, on the other hand, is based on nickel-chromium, resistant to high temperatures and pressures, and has extremely low magnetic permeability, avoiding interference with measurement-while-drilling (MWD) instruments.
2. Material Selection Criteria
Different depths and geological conditions influence material selection. Offshore drilling often uses Monel K-500 to resist salt spray corrosion, while deep well high-temperature environments favor Inconel 718, which can operate at temperatures exceeding 700°C while meeting the non-magnetic requirement. In some applications, titanium alloys are added to reduce weight, but this is more expensive.
